Practice play
Most practice play between members is organised directly between those concerned to best fit in around their other personal commitments.
Such play occurs during most weekdays, some weekday evenings and during many weekends.
New members readily find other members with compatible schedules (including co-ordination via the club's "whatsApp" group).
Our members who are largely or fully retired from full-time employment, or who have home-based, shift-based or other flexible working hours, much enjoy daytime games.
Including the opportunity to help new or developing players with honing their skills.
Players aged under 18 must be accompanied by an adult member responsible for their conduct.
Social play
As with practice play, this is normally arranged directly between members.
More regularly-scheduled social-play (and practice) sessions are generally held on Monday evenings from 7PM, dependent on the season.
Email or message via "WhatsApp" for confirmation in case a particular Monday-evening session is not proceeding.
Some Monday-evening sessions also include optional participation in games of chess (also open to chess-only participants) between games of billiards or snooker.
Therapeutic play
The well-known therapeutic-health benefits of playing a game of billiards or snooker, perhaps alone or not competitively, have also been appreciated by some members at relevant times.
Our clubrooms can offer relative solitude for such therapeutic play.
Club sporting competitions
Formal club competitions are generally organised on a round-robin basis, whereby all entrants play each other individually.
Players are handicapped to even up competition and help develop individual skills.
Bendigo League competitions
Inter-club sport with other Bendigo League clubs is organised on a team basis. With teams graded as A-grade, B-grade, C-grade, junior, etc.
After round-15 of the 2026 A-grade inter-club billiards competition, and after a 3-1 win against Sandhurst, Castlemaine's (four-member) team sits in fifth place with a team total of 891 to 678.
Three standard rounds of the inter-club billiards competition remain to be played.
Full results of the BBSA's 2026 billiards season can be found on the BendBSA Home Page.
Frank Hein Snooker Championship
Our annual Frank Hein Snooker Championship honours the contributions and skill of a much respected member of the Castlemaine Billiards and Snooker Club during his lifetime.
In 2026, the all-day championship (a round-robin competition between Bendigo league clubs) was held in Castlemaine on Saturday, 17 October.
The championship featured teams of three, from four of the five clubs affiliated to our regional league, the Bendigo Billiards and Snooker Association.
All members of each team played from scratch.
Each frame was played with 10 red balls over 24 frames. Each team member played 8 frames.
Castlemaine won the championship with victories in 18 of 24 Frames. Golden Square was second with 13, Eaglehawk third with 11, and Sandhurst fourth with 7.
Spectators
Billiards and snooker can be entertaining spectator sports. Especially when viewed close up in purpose-designed facilities.
No admission fee is paid by spectators at practice sessions and social play, nor during most sporting competitions.
Spectating is only permitted from the tiered-seating area. Not in the lower-floor playing area around the tables.
Movement to, from, and within the spectator seating must not occur while a player is preparing for, or delivering, a shot on a nearby table.
All spectators must be silent when players are preparing for or delivering a shot.
Spectators not complying with these rules forfeit their ability to remain in our clubrooms.
All spectators aged under 18 must be accompanied by an adult responsible for their conduct.
Shire Council by-laws prohibit possessing or drinking alcohol, and smoking or vaping, in our clubrooms.
